ABOUT THE ADOS-2 SCREENING

  • It is considered the gold standard of Autism screening when combined with a specialist consult (such as a child psychiatrist, pediatric neurologist or developmental pediatrician)

  • It can only be conducted by trained medical professionals

  • There are only a small number of therapists in South Africa who are able to provide this service

  • This is an objective observation conducted by a team, which provides information about the likelihood that a child may have Autism, as well as a holistic overview of a child's strengths and areas of need within the Spectrum.

  • It can be used to identify goals and better understand the clinical profile in children who already have an autism diagnosis

WHAT TO EXPECT

THE GOAL OF OUR ASSESSMENT IS TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS TO GUIDE THEM IN THE PROCESS OF DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY.

  • A full background profile of the child is completed by the parents

  • A sensory profile is completed by the parents and analyzed by the team

  • Videos of the child's behaviour in their comfortable environment are reviewed by the team

  • Parent consultation is done on the day of the assessment

  • ADOS screening is done (parents may be required to be present, depending on the module)

  • An online parent feedback session is arranged a week after the assessment, which includes:

    • A written report summarizing findings

    • Recommendations for specialists to visit for diagnosis

    • Recommendations of therapists close to the home of the family

    • Recommendations for school placement

    • As well as any other additional recommendations which were identified during the assessment
